Excursus 117 – On Dialectic as Method and as Ontology

Dialectic has not always meant the same thing. In its classical Greek form, particularly in the Socratic and Platonic traditions, dialectic was primarily an epistemological method. Through questioning, comparison, and the examination of opposing viewpoints, it served to clarify concepts, expose hidden assumptions, and test the coherence of arguments. In this sense, dialectic functioned as a methodological instrument rather than as a description of reality itself.

A fundamental transformation occurred with Hegel. Dialectic was no longer merely a method of philosophical inquiry but became an ontological principle. Contradiction was regarded not simply as a feature of thought but as the internal driving force through which concepts, history, and ultimately reality itself develop. Dialectic thus acquired a generative role: it was presented as the logic governing the unfolding of being itself.

Engels extended this conception further. In Dialectics of Nature, he argued that dialectical principles—especially the transformation of quantity into quality—should be understood as universal laws operating throughout the natural world. Physical, chemical, and biological processes were therefore interpreted as manifestations of dialectical development rather than merely as empirical phenomena requiring independent scientific explanation.

The legitimacy of this extension is, however, open to question. The usefulness of dialectic as a method of conceptual analysis does not by itself justify treating dialectical principles as laws of nature. Such an inference requires independent empirical support.

To support this extension, Hegel and Engels appealed to several examples from the natural sciences, including the phase transitions of water, the incandescence of heated metals, magnetic polarity reversal, carbon allotropes, the homologous hydrocarbon series, and the periodic table of the elements. A careful examination shows that none of these examples demonstrates the dialectical transformation of quantity into quality through internal contradiction. Indeed, each can already be questioned on logical or methodological grounds available in the nineteenth century, while modern physics, chemistry, and biology provide more precise explanations in terms of external conditions, specific mechanisms, probabilistic processes, threshold phenomena, and mathematical models rather than dialectical necessity.

This distinction also applies to later attempts to employ dialectical language in the natural sciences. For example, Stephen Jay Gould interpreted punctuated equilibrium in explicitly dialectical terms. Yet the observed pattern of long periods of evolutionary stability interrupted by relatively rapid speciation can be explained through population genetics, ecological circumstances, stochastic processes, and the incompleteness of the fossil record without invoking dialectical laws. The appearance of abrupt transformation therefore does not constitute evidence that nature itself develops dialectically.

Dialectic thus retains considerable value as an epistemological and heuristic method for examining ideas and conceptual systems. Its extension into ontology—and especially into the natural sciences as a universal explanatory principle—remains a distinct philosophical claim that requires independent justification. Without such justification, dialectic is best understood as a valuable method of inquiry rather than as a law governing reality itself.
