Scientific knowledge is historically cumulative. Theories are revised, methods are refined, instruments become more powerful, and standards of evidence evolve. Consequently, any philosophical account of science must distinguish between the historical development of a scientific discipline and its present methodological state.
This gives rise to what may be called the Age Problem. Philosophers and historians of science frequently discuss scientists who lived one or more centuries before them. Such historical inquiry is indispensable for understanding the origins and evolution of scientific thought. Difficulties arise, however, when general conclusions about science itself are drawn primarily from examples taken from earlier periods, without sufficient regard for subsequent developments.
The sciences are not static enterprises. Astronomy after Newton, biology after Darwin, genetics after Mendel, and physics after Einstein differ profoundly from the disciplines these pioneers themselves practiced. New instruments, statistical methods, mathematical models, experimental techniques, and computational approaches have transformed scientific inquiry in ways that earlier generations could scarcely have anticipated.
This does not diminish the importance of historical figures. On the contrary, understanding science requires understanding its history. Yet scientific ideas should be interpreted within their historical context, while philosophical claims about science should remain attentive to the continuing evolution of scientific practice.
The Age Problem therefore consists in treating earlier stages of scientific development as though they adequately represent science in its contemporary form. Such an approach risks attributing to present-day science methodological limitations that have long since been addressed or overcome.
Historical perspective remains indispensable, but it must be accompanied by historical proportion. A philosophy of science that neglects the evolution of science itself may become increasingly detached from the very enterprise it seeks to understand.
