Science and technology are closely related but distinct human enterprises. Their historical interaction has been so productive that they are often treated as though they were synonymous. Yet the primary aim of science is to understand the natural world, whereas the primary aim of technology is to modify it for practical purposes. Explanation and application, though mutually supportive, are not identical activities.
The distinction is also historical. Many important technologies emerged long before the scientific principles underlying them were understood. Agriculture, metallurgy, architecture, navigation, and numerous mechanical inventions were developed through accumulated practical experience rather than through systematic scientific investigation. Conversely, many scientific discoveries remained without practical application for decades or even centuries before giving rise to new technologies.
Modern technology increasingly depends upon scientific knowledge, while modern science often depends upon advanced technology. Telescopes, microscopes, particle accelerators, DNA sequencers, and supercomputers have transformed scientific research by making previously inaccessible phenomena observable and measurable. At the same time, scientific discoveries have repeatedly generated new technologies that reshape society. The relationship is therefore reciprocal rather than hierarchical.
Confusing science with technology may lead to important conceptual errors. Scientific theories may be employed for beneficial or harmful purposes, but the moral evaluation of a technological application does not determine the truth or falsity of the scientific knowledge upon which it is based. The development of nuclear physics, for example, made both nuclear power generation and nuclear weapons possible. Ethical judgments concerning these technologies are indispensable, yet they do not constitute arguments for or against the validity of nuclear physics itself.
Critiques directed at industrial systems, military applications, environmental degradation, or technological surveillance should therefore be distinguished from critiques of science as a method of inquiry. Scientific knowledge can be used wisely or unwisely, but its applications remain conceptually distinct from the methods by which that knowledge is acquired.
The relationship between science and technology is thus best understood as one of continuous interaction. Science expands the possibilities of technology by deepening our understanding of nature, while technology expands the possibilities of science by providing new instruments for observation, measurement, experimentation, and computation. Their mutual dependence should not obscure their distinct purposes.
