Excursus 046 – On Natura Non Facit Saltus

The maxim natura non facit saltus (“nature makes no leaps”) has long served both as a methodological principle and as an ontological hypothesis. Methodologically, it directs inquiry toward identifying intermediate stages and causal connections rather than accepting apparent discontinuities as ultimate explanations. Ontologically, it expresses the conviction that natural processes unfold through continuous transformations, even when observations suggest abrupt change.

Many phenomena appear discontinuous. Chemical reactions, phase transitions, evolutionary innovations, revolutions, and quantum events often present themselves as sudden breaks. Throughout the history of science and philosophy, such appearances have repeatedly inspired discontinuist interpretations, according to which genuine development proceeds through objective leaps rather than continuous processes.

Whether apparent discontinuities require discontinuous explanations, however, remains a distinct question. In many cases, what appears as a leap reflects the scale or resolution of observation rather than an interruption of the underlying process. Thresholds, accumulations, and critical points may produce abrupt observable effects while themselves arising from continuous interactions.

For this reason, natura non facit saltus remains valuable less as a metaphysical doctrine than as a methodological discipline. It encourages the search for hidden intermediaries, continuous mechanisms, and lawful transitions before treating discontinuity as fundamental. Apparent leaps may sometimes require genuinely discontinuous theories, but they should not be accepted merely because change appears abrupt.
