The term deductive in the modern hypothetico-deductive model preserves the formal structure of Aristotelian deduction while fundamentally transforming its epistemological function. In Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics, apodeixis signified demonstrative reasoning from first principles—propositions regarded as certain, self-evident, and indemonstrable. Deduction served to preserve that certainty: derived conclusions were necessarily true insofar as the premises were true.
Bacon, rejecting both the scholastic reliance on authority and the paucity of genuine first principles, redirected attention from demonstrative deduction to the inductive discovery of causes. Later empiricists, notably Hume, questioned the logical foundation of induction itself, leading twentieth-century philosophers such as Popper and Hempel—albeit for different methodological purposes—to reintroduce deduction within a new methodological framework.
In the hypothetico-deductive schema, deduction no longer derives necessary truths from self-evident axioms but testable consequences from provisional hypotheses. The logical form of deduction is retained in the form of Modus Tollens (if H, then O; not-O; therefore, not-H), yet its epistemic role is transformed: it becomes a tool for falsification rather than demonstration. Thus, deductive in this modern sense denotes a logical process rather than an Aristotelian inference from necessary first principles.
This transformation illustrates a broader principle in the history of scientific methodology: logical forms may persist while their epistemological functions change fundamentally.
