Excursus 129 – On the End of the Age of the Intellectual Giant

The history of science and philosophy is commonly narrated through a relatively small number of extraordinary individuals. Newton, Darwin, Maxwell, and Einstein became associated with transformations of entire areas of science; Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud exercised influence extending far beyond the subjects in which their ideas originated. Their intellectual stature was not merely a consequence of exceptional ability. It also reflected historical conditions under which a single individual could occupy, reorganize, or substantially influence a comparatively large portion of the available intellectual landscape.

Those conditions have progressively changed. The accumulated body of human knowledge has expanded enormously, while individual disciplines have divided into increasingly specialized areas of inquiry. Even within relatively narrow fields, years of specialized preparation may now be required before an investigator can work near the research frontier. A single person can therefore master a progressively smaller proportion of the knowledge relevant not merely to intellectual life as a whole, but often even to one established discipline.

At the same time, the population participating in intellectual activity has increased dramatically. Universities, research institutes, scholarly journals, and professional associations have multiplied throughout the world, while higher education has become accessible to populations that were largely excluded from organized scholarship in earlier centuries. An idea that might once have occurred to one of a relatively small number of investigators now arises within an international community containing thousands of people working on related problems. Intellectual ability has not necessarily diminished; the intellectual landscape has become far more densely populated.

Communication has transformed this landscape still further. Scientific journals once greatly accelerated the circulation of ideas; electronic communication has made that circulation almost immediate. But communication involves the movement of people as well as information. Modern transportation allows scholars from distant countries to meet repeatedly at conferences, workshops, visiting appointments, summer schools, collaborative projects, and informal gatherings. Minds that in earlier centuries might have developed largely in isolation can now encounter, criticize, and influence one another continuously. Ideas are consequently exposed much earlier to other minds and may be modified, combined, challenged, or independently rediscovered before they can become identified exclusively with one individual.

Modern intellectual achievement has therefore become increasingly distributed. In science, important advances frequently emerge from research communities involving many laboratories, disciplines, institutions, and countries. Experimental infrastructure, large datasets, sophisticated instrumentation, computation, and specialized expertise further encourage collective investigation. The resulting progress may be extraordinarily rapid even when no individual participant appears to have transformed the entire field. There is consequently no contradiction between accelerating scientific progress and the apparent decline of the scientific giant.

The distinction between absolute and relative intellectual achievement is important. Suppose an exceptional contemporary scientist were capable of contributing as much new knowledge in absolute terms as an exceptional scientist two centuries ago. The total body of scientific knowledge against which that contribution must be measured is now vastly larger. The contribution may therefore be equally remarkable in itself while constituting a much smaller proportion of the intellectual territory of its age. The intellectual giant may disappear relatively without disappearing absolutely.

Something similar may have occurred outside the natural sciences. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries could still produce figures such as Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, whose names became associated with broad explanatory frameworks extending across philosophy, psychology, politics, history, and social thought. Contemporary philosophers and social theorists may make contributions of exceptional originality, yet it is increasingly difficult for any individual to acquire comparable intellectual reach. A thinker such as Richard Rorty may exercise considerable influence within philosophy and neighboring disciplines without occupying the intellectual landscape in the manner once possible for Marx. The difference need not indicate lesser intellectual ability; it may reflect the enormously greater size, diversity, specialization, and interconnectedness of contemporary intellectual life.

The intellectual giant should therefore be understood partly as a relational phenomenon. Intellectual stature depends not only upon the magnitude of an individual’s achievement but also upon the size and structure of the intellectual world surrounding it. A mountain appears high partly in relation to the landscape from which it rises. As that landscape becomes more densely populated with other peaks, the possibility that any single one will dominate the entire horizon diminishes.

Future histories of knowledge may consequently be organized increasingly around fields, movements, and research communities rather than around individual names. Earlier histories readily speak of Newtonian mechanics, Darwinian evolution, Marxism, or Freudian psychology. Accounts of contemporary transformations are more likely to speak of genomics, artificial intelligence, evolutionary developmental biology, quantum information, or other collective enterprises whose development cannot readily be attributed to a single mind. Individual creativity remains indispensable, but it increasingly operates within networks of other creative individuals.

The end of the age of the intellectual giant should therefore not be confused with the disappearance of giant intellects. Exceptional minds presumably continue to appear, and extraordinary individual discoveries remain possible. What has changed is the intellectual ecology in which they operate. Knowledge has become too extensive, specialization too advanced, the population of investigators too large, and communication among them too rapid for any single individual easily to dominate a substantial portion of intellectual life. The apparent disappearance of the intellectual giant may thus represent not a decline in human intellectual capacity, but one of the consequences of the extraordinary success of intellectual progress itself.
