Darwin’s historical achievement was to synthesize evidence from several branches of biology into a coherent theory of evolution by common descent. This historical fact, however, should not be confused with an epistemological necessity. A scientific theory may be said to be Darwin-independent if its principal conceptual structure can be reconstructed from the evidential resources of a mature scientific discipline without relying on Darwin’s own synthesis or on evidence borrowed from other disciplines.
Thus, a comparative anatomist may infer branching descent, adaptive divergence, and genealogical classification from comparative morphology alone. A paleontologist may reconstruct much of the same historical framework from the succession and distribution of fossils. Likewise, a quantitative geneticist may derive the principal theoretical architecture of evolutionary change from the mathematics of heredity, selection, and variation without appealing to anatomical or paleontological evidence. Each discipline follows its own evidential path, yet arrives at substantially the same theoretical structure.
The convergence of these independently constructed accounts should not be interpreted as mutual dependence. Rather, it demonstrates that different mature disciplines may each possess sufficient internal evidential resources to reconstruct the same underlying reality. Interdisciplinary agreement therefore strengthens confidence in the theory, but it does not imply that any one discipline requires the evidential support of the others to establish its central conclusions.
When arguments from another discipline are nevertheless introduced, their epistemological status should be clearly distinguished. Such evidence may provide independent corroboration, but it does not become part of the intrinsic justification offered by the original discipline. Unless the borrowed evidence is itself critically evaluated within the argument, it functions as corroboration rather than as part of the discipline’s own evidential basis. Confusing these roles obscures the distinction between independent justification and interdisciplinary confirmation.
The distinction is epistemologically important. Independent confirmation should not be confused with epistemic dependence, and the pedagogical order in which a theory is commonly presented should not be mistaken for the logical order by which it can be justified. Darwin’s synthesis remains historically foundational, but the mature theory of evolution no longer depends epistemically upon Darwin’s own route to its discovery. Rather, it is independently reconstructible from several distinct domains of biological inquiry.
Although formulated here with reference to Darwin and the theory of evolution, the principle is more general. A scientific or philosophical theory reaches intellectual maturity when its principal conceptual structure can be reconstructed independently of its founder’s original synthesis. Darwin-independent evolution thus illustrates a broader phenomenon that may be termed founder-independent reconstruction.
