Bacon’s taxonomy of idola was an early attempt to systematize the sources of error in human thought. While his classification emphasized cultural, linguistic, and experiential distortions, modern cognitive science reveals an additional biological dimension to these sources of error. Perceptual and cognitive processes are constrained by the architecture of the nervous system, the filtering functions of sensory organs, and the evolutionary history of human cognition. For instance, visual perception is tuned to detect certain spatial frequencies and colors, privileging stimuli relevant to survival but leaving us insensitive to much of the electromagnetic spectrum. Similarly, working memory limitations and heuristic reasoning—adaptations that once enhanced decision-making under conditions of uncertainty—also give rise to systematic cognitive biases, such as confirmation bias, anchoring, and the availability heuristic, which can distort scientific as well as everyday reasoning. In this light, some of Bacon’s idola can be understood as the cultural or intellectual elaboration of deeper, biologically rooted constraints. The interplay between these layers suggests that epistemic reform requires not only methodological discipline but also an awareness of the evolved cognitive machinery through which we encounter the world.
