Excursus 010 – On Induction: One Word, Several Meanings

The first explicit use of the term inductio in the aphoristic sequence of the Novum Organum marks a structural and methodological transition. Bacon moves from diagnosing the corruption of notions to proposing the methodological alternative on which the Instauratio depends.

           
To avoid attributing later developments to Aristotle himself, it is useful to distinguish four layers of reception.

(i) Aristotle: his original theory of epagōgē involved a cognitive ascent from repeated perception to the grasp of a universal, not a mechanical enumeration of cases.

(ii) Scholastic Aristotle: medieval and Renaissance logic manuals systematized epagōgē into inductio per enumerationem simplicem—a formal, confirmatory procedure subordinate to syllogistic reasoning.


(iii) Bacon’s Aristotle: Bacon read Aristotle largely through the scholastic tradition and therefore often attributed to him views characteristic of the schools rather than of Aristotle’s texts alone.


(iv) Bacon’s target: the Scholastic model of induction, which he calls inductio vulgaris, not Aristotle’s own. His “true induction” (inductio vera) therefore positions itself against the school conception of induction rather than against Aristotle’s more complex account. This clarification preserves the historical Aristotle while accurately identifying Bacon’s polemical object.

Modern philosophy of science treats induction not as simple enumeration but as a family of inferential practices linking data to hypotheses under conditions of uncertainty. Modern approaches—whether Bayesian, frequentist, or model-based—presuppose systematic variation, explicit criteria of evidence, statistical rigor, and reproducibility. In this respect, Bacon’s inductio vera anticipated the need for structured experimentation and controlled comparison, even though it lacked the mathematical apparatus developed in later centuries. His call for “true induction” may thus be read as an early attempt to articulate disciplined empirical inference, distinct from both scholastic enumeration and modern statistical methods, but historically continuous with the emergence of scientific method.
